ATTENTION ALL HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS AND PARENTS:
I read the following recently in a Focus on the Family publication:
“...record numbers of movie fans—teens in particular—flock to multiplexes and video stores every day to be amused, amazed, and aroused... While parents are more than justified in protecting their children from unhealthy content, movies can also offer priceless opportunities for discussion, exploring virtues, and teaching teens how to apply a biblical perspective to entertainment.”
As a whole, teens at First Baptist Church are no different than teens across America: they love movies. It seems like not a week goes by that I don’t hear “When’s the next movie night?” from one of our students.
I’d like to announce the beginning of a new monthly event on the High School calendar called “filmCHAT.” Once a month, we will meet in the youth room or in a student’s home to chow down, watch a movie, then discuss the movie with particular attention paid to the spiritual lessons that can be drawn from the carefully selected film. Meaningful discussion following a thought-provoking film such as “Life is Beautiful,” or “Mr. Holland’s Opus,” or “Quiz Show,” or “The Count of Monte Cristo,” and countless others offer something beyond entertainment, namely a teaching opportunity.
