One of the greatest parenting challenges in our culture is endeavoring to establish a PG-rated home in an R-rated world. Parents today are inundated with so much techno-jargon that it's a struggle to keep up. Cell phones, texting, MySpace, Facebook, Twitter, ICQ, AOL chat, and many other social networking tools leave parents scrambling to educate themselves on exactly what their kids are into. And in all honesty, teenagers often know more about this stuff than their parents do! Answer these questions honestly and prayerfully:
- Can you name the last five movies your kid watched? Do you know the content and values communicated in them?
- ENTERTAINMENT or EDUCATION: How do you view movies/TV/books/music with impure content?
- Are you up to speed on what your kids are reading for entertainment?
- Are you on top of who your kids are texting at all hours of the day and night?
- Are your kids using text messaging to send pictures? Do you know what they're sending?
- Does your kid have a Facebook or a MySpace account? Have you seen it?
- How much personal information about your kid and your family is available on these sites for the world to see?
- Do you take the threat of online child predators seriously?
- Do your kids spend alot of time on a computer? What sites do your kids visit on the internet? Do you even know?
- MAKING YOUR KID'S INTERNET VIEWING YOUR BUSINESS: do you view this as an invasion of their privacy or as training them up in the way they should go?
- ACTIVE or PASSIVE: which describes the role you play in developing your kid's discernment and decision-making?
- Has this list of questions ENCOURAGED or DISCOURAGED you???
- How would God have you respond?
